If you have ever flown into New York City, you know the three main airports are JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark. The first two are located in Queens, NY but Newark Liberty International Airport is technically in New Jersey. However, its proximity to Manhattan makes it a convenient location to fly into when visiting NYC.
Starting in October, Newark’s airport will be removed as a “NYC airport”. A Lufthansa Group memo hit the Twitterverse, revealing that the airport would be separated from the other NYC airports. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) “has introduced a new standard for ‘Multi-Airport Cities.’” Multi-Airport Cities are large cities that have multiple airports sharing an IATA city code.
This is fancy lingo to mean EWR will no longer be listed under the city code NYC. When you go search for “flights for New York”, EWR won’t be listed. This also could mean that Newark will have its own prices and switching flight from LGA or JFK to EWR will incur a penalty or not be allowed.
This announcement is still developing. For more information visit: NBC New York
I am curious to see if this new policy will stick, it seems more limiting to EWR to not have their airport listed as a New York City airport. Traveling through EWR is a viable option to travel into New York City but not many travelers may know this, losing out on some budget friendly flights.
