2. Annapolis, MD

Distance from DC: 45 minutes

Known as the “Sailing Capital of the U.S.” and Home to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis is a great quick trip! Are you interested in maritime heritage, cultures sites and good food? – this Maryland town is perfect! You can explore all the sites via water with a boat or land by walking tours. It has a combined cosmopolitan flair with a rustic charm, making it a destination unlike any other in the DMV area.

Three must-see sites:

  • The United States Naval Academy is the No. 1 attraction in Annapolis. The campus is beautiful and pays homage to the naval branch of the military.
  • Ego Alley is not an alley in the traditional sense of the word; rather than a walkway, it’s a narrow waterway that spills out into Spa Creek. The name “Ego Alley” comes from the queue of expensive boats that parade through the waterway on evenings and weekends. But it does make for an interesting place to meander.
  • The pristine William Paca House & Garden is an immaculately restored 18th-century Georgian mansion, and it was the home of a young lawyer, William Paca, who eventually became one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the governor of Maryland. Along with a tour of the house, visitors should make time to wander around the carefully manicured 2-acre garden.

3. Little Washington VA

Distance from DC: 3 hours

The Town of Washington is a National Historic Landmark and since the 1800s has been called Little Washington to distinguish it from big Washington, DC., less than 70 miles away. There is a notably hotel there that is a must-stay, Five Diamond/Five Star Inn at Little Washington.

Little Washington, a tiny village in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where quality trumps quantity and dining and lodging establishments, shops and businesses have won several awards for excellence. It is definitely unique: “where else can you find in a five-block radius, one of the world’s best hotel restaurant, a Four Diamond Bed & Breakfast (Middleton Inn), a highly rated cycling/culinary tour (Tour d’Epicure), and a theatre featuring world-renowned musicians (The Theatre at Washington, Virginia). What’s cool about it? This town still has the same five-block by two-block grid it did when George Washington surveyed and laid it out over 250 years ago.

4. Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Distance from DC: 3 hours

With abundant state parks and a freshwater lake that covers 3,900 acres, Deep Creek Lake offers the perfect escape for your socially distant getaway. While the area attracts outdoor enthusiasts during the warmer months, winters in Western Maryland were made for skiing, the perfect outdoor socially distanced activity.

5. Virginia’s River Realm

Distance from DC: 2 hours, 30 minutes

Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay region is the perfect place to captivate you! Yes, in the warmer months there’s tons of watersports activities and the state parks is overflowing with hiking trails to discover. However, during the winter with fewer crowds, the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions hold a quiet charm. How much do you love oysters, one of nature’s sexiest aphrodisiac? The Virginia Oyster Trail contains some of the best stops in this region, including the Rappahannock Oyster Co., Merroir Tasting Room, the Dog and Oyster Vineyard in Irvington. Tons of places for visitors to eat delicious oysters, pair fried or raw oysters with chardonnay and chambourcin, dabble in other seafood dishes, all the while sitting next to a firepit or heater on its gravel porch or open-air tasting room. My recommendation: stay overnight at a charming B&Bs, the historic Hope and Glory Inn, a former boarding school that dates to 1890.

  • Honorable Mention: Baltimore, Maryland

Distance from DC: 30 – 60 minutes

Of course, I have to mention B-More but a lot of people would argue this really isn’t a quick getaway trip. I disagree 110 % – Baltimore is such a fun city that making a weekend trip of it would be a blast! You’ll want to pack a good set of walking shoes to stroll along the Inner Harbor, visit the Federal Hill Park, the Maryland Zoo and make your way to the Baltimore Museum of Art, where you’ll find impressionist paintings from the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Cézanne. Do you love seafood and good crab? If the answer is yes, then Baltimore is the perfect place to go for the world-renowned Maryland Blue Crab.
