Open Streets DC 2021

Open Streets returned to Georgia Avenue NW, this past Saturday, October 2 from 10 am to 3 pm. During the event, the District closed off three street miles from Georgia Avenue NW, between Barry Place NW and Missouri Avenue NW. No cars, buses or trucks were allowed on the roads during the festival. The corridor was completely open to residents and visitors to walk, bike, run, and scooter through! Fun for all; adults, couples, and families.

It was a free event featuring several local businesses, vendors, and City programs. Five activation zones along the route hosted hourly programmed classes and demonstrations including yoga, drum circles, double dutch, pop-up bike lanes, dancing, and more. Restaurants along the route also participated by providing an outdoor dining experience, food, music, and good vibes.

The Howard University’s Marching Band kicked off the event with a performance on the mainstage at 10 am. After that you were free to roam the streets, I did a lot of walking and visited the Double Dutch corner, Wutoh’s Mixed Martial Arts demonstration and caught a little bit of the Skate DC’s Learn to Skate clinic. At the end, UCB’s Go-Go Band closed out the festival in a true DC party style!

“Ain’t no party like a DC party, if there’s no gogo music” – They really rocked the streets.

This event provided an opportunity to support local businesses and gave residents a chance to participate in a range of activities related to travel, fitness, and fun. I do wish there was more activities and demonstrations spread throughout the 3 miles. More food vendors, outdoor music or DJs and alcohol would have taken the event to the next level. Considering this is the return event since 2019 it wasn’t bad at all. It was definitely a vibe!
