Florida Avenue Grill

Of course, this spot would have to be the first on the list. Florida Avenue Grill is a longtime diner serving ample Southern food. The Grill has stood the test of time and has grown to become the world-famous Florida Avenue Grill. It has recently been determined that it is the oldest soul food restaurant in the world. Some of the must-trys are Fish and Grits Breakfast, Smothered Pork Chops, and the Cajun Fried Catfish. 1100 Florida Ave NW

Henry’s Soul Café

This small carryout spot has a big name for itself all over the Washington DC Metro area. This spot is home to a delicious sweet potato pie and is known for its fine southern cooking. You must get their giant wings, roasted until they fall-apart and smothered in a rosemary-flecked gravy –order the best dark meat that hugs the bone. Platters come with cornbread stuffing plus two sides. You can’t go wrong with the pork collards and cheddar mac.  1704 U St., NW; 5431 Indian Head Hwy., Oxon Hill.

The Carolina Kitchen Bar & Grill

A true taste of the south, the Carolina Kitchen has been dishing up its traditional and savory homestyle cooking since 1996. Stomping Ground

At this Del Ray is a down-home destination for coffee, biscuit sandwiches, seasonal salads & pastries, plus wine & beer. Their beautifully flaky, golden biscuits are worth the trip and hassle. Owner Nicole Jones tested several recipes before settling on the classic trinity of ingredients: White Lily flour, butter, and buttermilk. We love them with a slather of the house-made jam, but they also make for a pretty tasty fried-chicken or bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich.  2309 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria.

KitchenCray – H Street

A casual upbeat restaurant serving hearty Southern-style comfort food along with a homemade lemonade. The main chef, Chef James, has prepared a menu that caters to everyone’s taste. Go ahead and order the crab tots, Philly cheesesteak omelet, and seafood mac and cheese. 1301 H St. NE
